Four seemingly-unrelated men board subway train Pelham 1:23 at successive stations. Mr. Blue, Mr. Green, Mr. Grey and Mr. Brown are heavily armed and overpower the motorman and novice conductor to take control of the train. Between stations they separate the front car from the remainder of the train, setting passengers in the back cars and the motorman free. The four demand $1 million ransom within exactly one hour for the remaining eighteen hostages, including the conductor. If their demands are not met in time or their directions are not followed precisely, they will begin to shoot hostages dead, one every minute the money is late. Wisecracking Lt. Zach Garber of the transit police ends up being the primary communicator between the hijackers and the authorities, which includes transit operations, his own police force, the NYPD, and the unpopular and currently flu ridden mayor who will make the ultimate decision of whether to pay the ransom. Unknown to Garber, what may be working on their side is the disparate nature of the four hijackers, including methodical and unbending Blue, trigger happy Grey, and also under the weather Green, who may pass out before the caper has concluded. What Garber does know is that there is a plain clothes NYPD officer among the eighteen hostages. What Garber has to try and figure out is how the four hijackers can possibly get away, as they are in a tunnel and have to remain with the train since it has a dead-man mechanism which requires a motorman at the controls at all times. Pelham 1-2-3, a subway train, becomes the focal point of the most audacious and unusual terrorist attack ever seen. Four gunmen, going by color codenames, seize the train and hold its passengers and conductor hostage halfway between underground stations, demanding a hefty ransom else they will begin executing hostages. A veteran NY transit policeman leads negotiations with the hijackers to prevent any killing, but amid the showdown a question nags at authrorities - with the gunmen and their hostages in a tunnel surrounded by police on all sides, how can they possibly escape? Robert Shaw was one of Hollywood's best kept secrets and it's sad that he passed when he was really catching audiences attention. This, for me, is the essence of Shaw's brilliance as an actor. He had a sort of coldness and sarcasm that I can only compare to another great character actor in Claude Rains. Both of them were wonderful villians. When they were the guys, you know they were the bad guys…and in this film you know that Shaw is one bad guy. The way he looks at his watch, as time is of the essence. The precision with how handles his every move. That voice! He had a voice that was almost like a hiss from a snake. It was amazing, his talent and dedication to a character. This was one of his best… see it again and watch closely for Shaw's intense performance. this movie is so good probably the people making it didn't even know what they were doing….for a stalled subway train nothing in the history of movies ever moved faster…..and probably primarily because of the editor….if it was all in the script that would be verrrrrrrrry surprising….but unless and until a dvd comes along with commentary we'll never know and probably not even then…… ] sir walter was never better, not even in charlie varrick, this is THE definitive performance for him, he so subtle that even his gum chewing is revealing practically down towhether its on the left or right side of his mouth….every pause and inflection of his moves at JUST the right level…..and robert shaw is almost and maybe even dead level equal with him the way he handles his prop glasses and plays with his crossword puzzle while the hour runs out for the new yorkers on the train who comprise the best single cross section take on new york in the 70s ever…..<br/><br/>but remember, joseph sargeant , the director, was seemingly a<br/><br/>private before that, and apparently got his stripes cut shortly after that, and the writer looks like got exiled to some gulag in the desert outside l.a. so more and more this is beginning to look like just about the happiest accident in the history of Hollywood or err….new york…… Throughout, there's a skillful balance between the vulnerability of New Yorkers and the drastic, provocative sense of comedy that thrives all over our sidewalks. Four men, who go only by the names Mr Blue (<a href="/name/nm0001727/">Robert Shaw</a>), Mr Green (<a href="/name/nm0000842/">Martin Balsam</a>), Mr Gray (<a href="/name/nm0001185/">Hector Elizondo</a>), and Mr Brown (<a href="/name/nm0385561/">Earl Hindman</a>), hijack New York City's Pelham 1:23 subway train, take 17 passengers plus the conductor as hostages, and demand $1 million dollars in ransom, and they want it in exactly one hour or they will execute one hostage each minute that the money is late. Lt Zachary Garber (<a href="/name/nm0000527/">Walter Matthau</a>) of the NYC Transit Police must negotiate with the hijackers, contend with City Hall red tape, and try to identify the hijackers and figure out how they intend to escape, since they are in a tunnel surrounded on all sides by police. The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (aka The Taking of Pelham 123) is based on the 1973 novel (same title) by American author Morton Freedgood, writing under the pen name of John Godey. The novel was adapted for the movie by American screenwriter Peter Stone. There have since been two remakes: <a href="/title/tt0140594/">The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1998)</a> (a television release in 1998) and <a href="/title/tt1111422/">The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009)</a> (2009). "Pelham" refers to a local Manhattan train that departs from Pelham Bay Park. The 1-2-3 refers to the time that it leaves: 1:23. In order to assure the safety of the hostages, the mayor (<a href="/name/nm0908751/">Lee Wallace</a>) agrees to pay the ransom. Unfortunately, it took them almost a half hour to come to that decision. Now they've got only 30 minutes to get and deliver the million dollars. The dead man feature is a device built into the train that requires a motorman's hand to be pressing the throttle at all times. If it's released, the train stops cold. Once the money is in their hands, the hijackers start up the train, having found a way to circumvent the dead man feature. They get off the train and backtrack through the tunnel while the train goes forward, picking up speed until the passengers become alarmed and realize that no one is driving the train. On a hunch, Lt Garver and Inspector Daniels (<a href="/name/nm0364918/">Julius Harris</a>) backtrack to the 17th Street station where the train made a short stop (that's where the hijackers got off). Meanwhile, the train has tripped a red light and stopped at the South Ferry Loop, and all of the passengers are safe. Mr Blue has shot and killed Mr Gray for refusing to relinquish his gun, Mr Green has exited the subway with his share of the money, and a plain clothes policeman, who was among the hostages and managed to get off the train, has shot and killed Mr Brown and been shot by Mr Blue. Just as Mr Blue is about to finish off the policeman, Garver shows up and pulls a gun on Mr Blue. Realizing that he's been caught and learning that New York does not execute criminals, Mr Blue steps on the hot rail and electrocutes himself. Three hijackers accounted for, but who is the fourth? Armed with a list of nine ex-motormen, one of whom could possibly be the fourth hijacker, Garver and Lt Patrone (<a href="/name/nm0005467/">Jerry Stiller</a>) visit each man on the list, checking their alibis.
